Caring for Your Farm-Grown Christmas Tree

Updated: Oct 29

A Guide to a Lasting Holiday Tradition

Congratulations on choosing a beautiful farm-grown Christmas tree from BCT.farm! With proper care, your tree will stay fresh and vibrant throughout the holiday season. Here's a helpful guide to ensure your tree thrives indoors:

Hydration is Key:

  • Just like any living thing, your Christmas tree needs plenty of water. When a tree is cut, more than half its weight is water. By providing consistent hydration, you'll maintain its quality and minimize needle loss.

Choosing the Right Stand:

  • Select a stand that can hold enough water for your tree. A good rule of thumb is to choose a stand that can hold one quart of water for every inch of stem diameter. Some stands even have handy features to help you maintain a constant water level.

  • Make sure the stand fits your tree comfortably. Avoid whittling down the sides of the trunk to fit – the outer layers are most efficient at absorbing water and shouldn't be removed.

Fresh Cut for Optimal Absorption:

  • Before placing your tree in the stand, it should have a fresh cut removing about a half-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk. We do this at our lot with every purchase. This cut should be straight across, perpendicular to the stem. If doing it yourself avoid cutting at an angle or into a v-shape, as this makes it harder for the tree to absorb water and stay secure in the stand.

Hydrate as Soon as Possible:

  • Once you bring your tree home, prioritize placing it in water. Most tree species can go 6 to 8 hours after cutting before they lose their ability to absorb water.

  • To prevent damage, avoid bruising or dirtying the cut surface. If necessary, you can temporarily store the tree in a cool location for a few days. Simply place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket filled with water.

Temperature and Light Matters:

  • Keep your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces, heaters, air vents, and direct sunlight. A cooler environment slows down the drying process, reducing its daily water needs.

  • Use low-heat lights like miniature bulbs to minimize drying.

Safety First:

  • Before decorating, inspect your lights for wear and tear. Replace any worn-out lights with new ones to avoid electrical hazards.

  • Avoid overloading electrical circuits.

  • Always turn off the lights when leaving the house or going to bed.

Monitor Freshness:

  • Keep an eye on your tree's freshness. After Christmas, or if the tree becomes dry, remove it from your home to prevent any hazards.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure your farm-grown Christmas tree stays fresh and festive throughout the holiday season. Enjoy your beautiful tree and have a wonderful holiday!
