A big part of Burghardt Christmas Traditions comes from the beautiful Fraser Fir Christmas trees we source from the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountain foothills of Northwestern North Carolina. Christmas is more than just a season for us; it's a family tradition, a time to connect with our North Carolina growers, and a way to bring joy to homes across the country.
This year, however, our hearts are heavy. Hurricane Helene's devastation has struck a deep chord, particularly in the Northwestern region where the majority of our Fraser firs are grown. While our suppliers' trees themselves seem to be faring well, their communities are not. Homes, infrastructure, and many lives have been lost and are still missing in this "once-in-a-thousand-year storm."
The Heart of Christmas Tree Country
North Carolina is not just a Christmas tree source for Burghardt Christmas Traditions, it's a national treasure. Did you know?
-North Carolina is the second-largest producer of Christmas trees in the entire United States, providing over 20% of real Christmas trees across the country.
-The Fraser fir is the most popular Christmas tree and is known for its soft needles, long-lasting aroma, and strong branches, and is almost exclusively grown in the western counties of North Carolina, with Ashe County leading the pack.
-Ashe County Christmas trees have even graced the White House more than trees from any other county!
A Season of Giving, Not Just Getting
The devastation in North Carolina is a stark reminder that the spirit of Christmas is more about giving than receiving. While we wait for news on the full impact on our suppliers, we want to extend our support to the communities that have been hit so hard.
These are just a few of the organizations on the ground, working tirelessly to provide relief:
-Samaritan's Purse: Providing emergency shelter, food, and medical care.
-Hearts With Hands (Swannanoa/Asheville): Offering immediate and long-term assistance to families impacted by the disaster.
-Manna Food Bank in Asheville: Supplying critical food resources to those struggling in the aftermath.
-Wine to Water: Working to restore clean water access to affected communities.
-Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry: Providing a safety net for families in need.
-Team Rubicon: Deploying veteran volunteers for disaster relief and rebuilding efforts.
-Mercy Chefs: Serving hot meals to those displaced from their homes.
Even a small donation can make a big difference in these difficult times.
This Christmas season, let's remember the true spirit of giving and extend a helping hand to those affected by Hurricane Helene. Together, we can bring some Christmas cheer back to North Carolina, the heart of Christmas tree country.
